In a video message posted to YouTube on Tuesday, Jan. 10, Congresswoman Katie Porter (D-Irvine), announced her campaign for a seat in the U.S. Senate. Porter, who currently serves as the 47th Congressional District Representative, beat Orange County Republican Scott Baugh in November’s midterm election in a closely fought race — with final votes recording Porter with 51.72% to Baugh with 48.28%.

“California needs a warrior in Washington, and that’s exactly why I’m announcing my candidacy for the United States Senate in 2024,” Porter said. “I don’t do Congress the way others often do. I use whatever power I have to speak hard truths to the power that be — to not just challenge the status-quo, but call it out, name names, and demand justice,” Porter said. “That goes for taking on Wall Street and the big banks, Big Oil, and Big Pharma.”

With the announcement, Porter will aim to take the seat of California Senator Dianne Feinstein, who hasn’t announced plans to run again for 2024. Feinstein will be 91 years old in 2024 when her six-year term is set to expire, and has been criticized within her party for staying in the seat while showing signs of her advanced age.

Following Porter’s announcement, Baugh took to Twitter to announce he would be running again to be the 47th Congressional District Representative in 2024.
